Aqueous wax polishing compositions contain, as a leveller, a compound of the general formula wherein Rf is a C8- 13 perfluoroalkyl group having a chain length of at least 7 carbon atoms or a C10- 12 monochloroperflouroalkyl group having a chain length of at least 9 carbon atoms, R is hydrogen or a C1- 4 alkyl group, R1 is a C1- 6 alkylene or monohydroxy alkylene group and M is hydrogen, an alkali metal or ammonium. Specified waxes are carnauba, candellia, ouricury, beeswax, paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax and montan. The compositions may include a resin, e.g. terpene modified phenolic resins, rosin maleates or rosin fumarates.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein Rf represents a perfluoroalkyl group containing 8 to 13 carbon atoms with a chain length of at least 7 carbon atoms counting from the carbon adjacent to the carbonyl group or a monochloroperfluoroalkyl group of 10 to 12 carbon atoms with a chain length of at least 9 carbon atoms counting from the carbon adjacent to the carbonyl group, R is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkylene group or a monohydroxyalkylene group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and M is hydrogen, an alkali metal or ammonium. The compounds are made by the reaction of the acid fluoride or acid chloride RfCOF or RfCOCl or the halosulphate RfOSO2F or RfOSO2Cl with the amino acid HRN.R1. COOH, preferably in the presence of excess amino acid or a tertiary amine which combine with the acid eliminated. The salts of the compounds are made by treatment with an alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia. The free acid also forms Werner type chrome complexes. The resin may be shellae, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyacrylates polyvinyl chloride, and copolymers of vinylide chloride and acrylonitrile. Coating is effected by spreading the liquid emulsion on the tile, removing excess liquid and allowing the coating to dry to give a glossy film.
