PURPOSE: A method and a device for automatically establishing a recording current are provided to conveniently establishing optimum recording current regardless of existence of unstable traveling state in a traveling system and deviation in an element characteristic. CONSTITUTION: A track format generator(31) generates the first track format signal. An add/converter(32) adds a recording signal having a second track format and the first track format generated in the track format generator to generate a recording signal. A recording amplify unit(33) amplifies the signal from the add/converter. A recording amplify unit(36) amplifies the added signal. A deck unit(35) records the amplified signal on a tape for playing back the signal. A playback amplify unit(36) amplifies the playback signal. A playback signal level detector(37) detects level of the playback signal. A microcomputer detector(34) controls amplifying rate of the recording amplify unit according to the signal from the level detector.
