A portable console (16) includes a universal positioning arm (18) supporting a clamp (116) having quick disconnect means (192, 194, 196, 198) for releasably holding a surgical instrument (14) such as an endoscope during a surgical procedure. The clamp includes a shaft (116A) with a bayonet connector (198) resiliently coupled to the shaft for releasable, latching engagement with a coupling collar (108) attached to the positioning arm.
