PURPOSE: A method for operating a session and resource manager in a VOD system is provided to achieve network access at a desired session, regardless of other users' session processing periods, under UN(User to Network) environments, in a VOD system operated by a DSM-CC(Digital Storage Media Command and Control) protocol. CONSTITUTION: If a message is received(301), a session manager analyzes the header of the message(302) and judges whether the ProtocolDiscriminator information of the message has been rightly received(303). If it is judged that ProtocolDiscriminator information has been rightly received, the session manager checks whether dsmccType information is correct(305). If dsmccType information was inputted as information indicating a UN, the session manager judges that the received message is correct and checks whether the message belongs to a new session(306). In case that the message belongs to a new session, the session manager generates a process dedicated to the currently inputted session(307). The session manager checks whether the message is from a client(308). If the message is not from the client, the session manager checks whether the message is from a server(310). If the message is the one transmitted from either of them, the session manager operates the generated process to execute decoding for the supplied message, generates an event, and executes a function corresponding to the message(311). In case that the assignment or release of a resource is required, the session manager controls a resource manager to execute a relevant function. In case that the encoded message is necessarily to be outputted, the session manager sends it to an ATM network card(312). After judging the completion of the session according to a release request from the client or the server(313), the session manager deletes the dedicated process and finalizes work(314).
