PURPOSE: A printer having a virus detecting device and method for processing received data are provided to protect a system by detecting a virus from the received data, deciding a deletion, and processing data, which is not infected . CONSTITUTION: A printer(30) is connected to a plurality of user computers(10) and a network(20), which is a communication interface. The printer(30) includes a printer controller(32), a printer engine(33) and a memory(34). The memory(34) includes a buffer(35) for temporarily storing data transmitted from the user computers(10), a detecting device(36) for detecting a virus in data stored in the buffer(35), and a virus treatment device(37) for treating the virus. A printer controller(32) stores data received from the user computers(10) in the buffer(35), detects the virus by the detecting device(36), and processes uninfected data in accordance with the characteristics of the data. The printer engine(33) is controlled and driven by the printer controller(32), and is in charge of an actual printing.
