A versatile safety device (10) that detects tilting usable in combination with a hat (99) for driver alertness or in combination with a floatation device (100) for swimming pool safety. The device is composed primarily of an inner and an outer lightweight metallic cup (23, 27) resting on a generally flat base (40) that complete an electric circuit when the device is tilted at least to a certain adjustable angle either because a driver's head is tilted due to drowsiness or due to waves on the water surface which the device supportably rests on.
