The present invention relates to a filter for use in a dispensing syste m in which liquid is dispensed from at least one nozzle having a dispensing orifice with a diameter and an engagement dimension. The filter comprises a perforate porti on adapted to be disposed in a liquid flow path and an exposed portion adapted to be viewed while the filter is connected to the dispensing system. The exposed portion includes a first visually identifiable indicium corresponding to the orifice diameter. A filter used, for example, in a hot melt adhesive dispensing system also incorporates similar properties.
