The drive system has a drive unit (12), a gearbox arrangement (20), a clutch (16) which can make a torque transfer coupling between the drive unit and gearbox arrangement, a starter unit (56) and a controller (36). A brake actuation detector detects the actuation of a braking arrangement. The controller only operates the starter unit if the brake actuation detector has detected operation of the braking arrangement. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a drive system.
