Process for the polynitration of aromatic compounds

Continuous dinitration of aromatic cpds. (I) comprises reacting (I) with a nitronium ion-contg. soln. in which: (a) the dinitration is carried out in a single reactor under adiabatic conditions in an emulsion as the reaction medium; (b) 1.3-3.5 mols. HNO3 in the form of a nitronium ion contg. soln. is metered into the reaction per mol. (I); (c) the emulsion, which has a tendency to coalesce, is maintained by repeated redispersion; (d) the first dispersion of the liq. streams to form the emulsion is carried out in < 1 sec.; and (e) ≥ 20% of the total HNO3 is used for the first dispersion.
