A balloon catheter (1) comprising a catheter shaft (2) formed by joining a proximal side tubular member (3) and a distal side tubular member (4), an adapter member (6) connected to the base end of the catheter shaft (2) and a balloon (5) connected to the distal end of the shaft (2), wherein a metal coil-shaped elastic body (10) is disposed in the inner space of the adapter member (6) so as to be movable in the distal direction, the elastic body (10) contacting an annular wall portion (11a) formed on the outer peripheral surface of the base end of an elastic force transmitter (11) to support the transmitter (11) toward the distal side thereof. In addition, the tip end of a linear member (12), one of the components of this transmitter (11), extends up to the internal space (5f) of the balloon and is bonded to the outer peripheral surface of a guide wire passing tube (7). This arrangement allows the elastic supporting force of the elastic body (10) to be transmitted to a sleeve (5d) on the distal side of the balloon (5) via the transmitter (11) to impart an axial tensile force to the balloon (5).
