The invention relates to a building block construction system having a plurality of building blocks (1), especially toy building blocks, which can be interconnected. Said building blocks are provided with undercut grooves (5) on their side surfaces (4). A coupling element (2) can be inserted into said grooves so as to link the building blocks (1). Said grooves (5) of the building blocks (1) are closed at one end in an axial direction. The building blocks (1) are interconnected via the coupling element (2) inserted into the grooves (5) either in a form-fit or in a non-form-fit manner in the direction of linking the building blocks (1).
