The diffractive element (3) comprises two different segments. Apparatus for cutting, welding, boring or removing a workpiece (1) comprises: (a) a laser light source producing the laser light (2); (b) a diffractive element (3) focusing a part (2a) of the laser beam to a first focal point (F1) in a first plane neighboring the surface (5) of the workpiece facing away from the laser light and focusing a further part (2b) to a further focal point opposite the first focal point; and (c) a device for relatively moving between the laser beam and the workpiece.
