A system for sending and receiving audio/video data from a first location (2 , 8-10) to a second location over existing telephone lines (18), includes devi ce (6, 12) for converting audio/video data into a stream of packets, device for reconverting the stream of packets into audio/video data, and device (20) fo r bypassing telephone company voice switches (24), thereby allowing the packet s to travel directly from the local telephone lines (18) to the long distant telephone network (28).
