The system has a number of detector elements (24) arranged in columns with respect to an X-ray source and each other so that data representing slices of different thicknesses can be produced. The detector elements are sized and arranged so that at least some in each column have lengths that change in the z-axis direction according to a given sequence code representing all whole numbers in equal steps from one to an integer greater than one. An Independent claim is also included for a method of spatially encoding the detector elements of a computerized tomography scanner detector arrangement.
