The invention relates to a device for controlling engine speed, comprising a speed sensor that enables a voltage pulse signal with a pulse sequence dependent on engine speed to be obtained directly from a sensor signal or by means of intermediate processing. The inventive device also includes a converter unit that converts a voltage pulse signal into a pulse-dependent direct voltage signal. According to the invention, the converter unit comprises a pulse generator (1) that produces a clock signal (TS) which has a higher pulse frequency than the maximum pulse frequency which can occur in the sensor pulse signal, a signal processing element (3, S1, S2) that eliminates a pulse in the clock signal whenever the level of the voltage pulse signal changes and emits a resulting signal or a signal that is synchronously derived thereform as a processing output signal (PS), in addition to a final stage (2), whereby integrated low pass filtering of the processing output signal occurs. This results in short reaction times and high restoring torque in the case of deviations in speed control, especially at very low speeds. The inventive method is used, for example, for speed-controlled engine transmissions.
