Methods and apparatus enable dissimilar devices to exchange information over a computer network having a first device (14), a second device (16) and a verification server (12). The verification server (12) stores a database (10 ) of permissible sending and receiving devices. The first device (14) generate s a request-send-authorization-signal in a first direction (1) to the verifyin g server. The verification server (12) receives and compares the request authorization signal to the database and in case of correspondence generates a send-authorization-signal in a second direction (2) to the first device. The first device, responsive to the send-authorization-signal, sends a communication signal in a third direction (3) to the second device. Before a complete exchange between the first device and the second device may occur, however, the second device (16) receives the communication signal and responsive thereto generates a request-receive-authorization-signal in a fourth direction (4) to the verifying server. The verification server receiv es the request-receive-authorization-signal, compares it to the database, and generates in case of correspondence a receive-authorization-signal in a fift h direction (5) to the second device, which receive-authorization-signal cause s the second device to receive a message from the first device. A translation function is preferably provided prior to causing the second device to receiv e the message from the first device, which may be related to dissimilar device hardware, software device protocol, network security, domestic/international communication standards, language or other factors.
