Golf spikes 70 are secured to the sole 58 of a shoe by a plurality of holders 50 attached to an anchor plate 12 which has an outline corresponding to a shoe half sole and which consists of a toe section 20 and a shank section 22 joined together by a narrow land 40 so that the shoe remains flexible in the region of the ball of the foot. Each spike 70 is screwed into an internally threaded sleeve portion 48 of a holder 50 and each holder 50 is secured to the anchor plate 12 by a flange 52 having ears which pass through slots in the anchor plate 12 and are folded under the anchor plate 12. When the spike is secured near the periphery of the sole one of the ears may be folded over the edge of the anchor plate. The anchor plate 12 may be made of spring steel and is incorporated in a shoe between the outer sole 60 and the intermediate sole 64.
