A mass transfer composite membrane (12) for use with a fuel cell power plant (10) includes a transfer medium core (62) between opposed, rigid, porous support sheets (64, 66). Inlet surface (54) is in contact with an oxidant source (36) and exhaust surface (56) is in contact with an exhaust passage (40) from fuel cell (13) to recover mass and transfer it into the oxidant inlet stream (38) entering fuel cell (13). A preferred transfer medium core (62) is an ionomeric membrane such as a water saturated polyfluorosulfonic acid ionomer membrane. The mass transfer composite membrane (12) may be a flat or a mounded layer defining protrusions and depressions, with a plurality of such layers being disposed within a frame (46) in mirror-image association, wherein protrusions and depressions formed by the mounds of adjacent membranes contact each other to define serpentine passages for the inlet streams (IS) and the exhaust streams (ES).
|
