Armature position determining method is used for an armature in association with an actuator (11) having at least one wound electromagnet (113,115). The armature includes an armature plate (116) which is movable between a first seating- or contact- surface (115a) on the electromagnet and a second seating (contact) surface (115b). The time derivatives (I1sI,I2sI) of the current through the electromagnet coil (113,115) and the voltage drops (UIS1,UIS2) at the coil are determined at two time points sufficiently spaced apart for the voltage drops at the coil to be different. The position (X) depends on the voltage drops at the coil and the time derivatives (I1sI,I2sI) of the current through the coil at the two time points.
