Racetrack activated sludge treatment basin with up-flow separator minimizes the size of this and subsequent waste water treatment basins

Combined biological and biological chemical processes are used to treat waste water using activated sludge in a basin incorporating an open racetrack conduit in which the water flows at speeds of between 0.10 and 0.50 m/s. In principle the water is redirected upwards through more than 90 degrees through a horizontal packet-type shallow separator, positioned at a depth of more than 0.2 m. At its above-water margins the separator has water flow-prevention barriers. Having been subject treated to biological treatment in the basin and following passage through the separator, the water flows to the next treatment stage or to final polishing-
