A battery-operated, mobile telephone and method for use with a base station, which sends each message several times to the mobile telephone so as to increase the probability of receipt thereby. The mobile telephone comprises a slot skipping unit for invoking a skipping mode wherein receiving slots of a mobile control channel are skipped while in idle mode, and a switch coupled to the slot skipping unit for deenergizing a communication circuit of the mobile telephone except during those receiving slots that are not skipped and for energizing said communication circuit when an incoming call is received. Preferably, a coverage characteristic constituted by the signal strength of the mobile control channel and a channel characteristic constituted by the signaling load are monitored and, based on these parameters, the slot skipping unit decides whether or not to invoke slot skipping mode. |
