The invented tamping unit (7) for track (3) tamping machines (1) intended for packing a group (29) of adjacent sleepers of the track (3) is provided with tool drivers (15, 16, 17), that are arranged in the track (3) longitudinal direction one after another and that are adjustable for height independently on each other. Further it is provided with packing tools (22, 23, 24, 25) being mounted on said tool drivers (15, 16, 17) with possibility of feed in the track (3) longitudinal direction mediated by a feed drive for packing a sleeper. The first tool driver (15) has three packing tools (23, 24, 25) being arranged one after another in the machine longitudinal direction, while the second tool driver (16) has two packing tools (22) being also arranged one after another in the machine longitudinal direction. At least the feed drive (28) of the packing tool (22) being arranged in vicinity of the first tool driver (15) on the second tool driver (16) cares for the first feed drive of both packing tools (22) in the direction toward each other and for the second feed drive in the direction away from each other.
