Only part of a feed gas is compressed in a first compressor (2) with variable speed of rotation. A given gas flow is compressed by a second compressor (2A) with fixed speed of rotation mounted in parallel with the first compressor. At least one parameter representing the gas flow required by the user is measured and the speed of the first compressor is varied as a function of this parameter. A gas is generated in a separator (1). The part of the gas fed to the first compressor covers the majority of the variation in capacity of the separator. The parameter is the pressure and/or the gas flow and/or the purity of the gas produced. The flow of the residual gas or the produced gas from the separator is regulated as a function of the speed of rotation of the compressor. In a lower level of the feed gas variation, in particular at the minimum capacity of the separator, the power consumed by the first compressor is increased as the flow increases, keeping the recycling pressure of the compressor constant so that, when a higher level is reached, in particular near the maximum capacity of the separator, the power is kept constant whilst reducing the recycling pressure as the flow increases. The gas is nitrogen and/or oxygen and the separator uses permeation or distillation. Installation for carrying out the above process. |
