Reduction of the transmission delay for urgent data

In a transmission system, in which the noise level varies periodically (such as an ADSL system in close proximity to a time division duplex ISDN system), the total amount of data transmitted per symbol is varied in accordance with the changing noise level. In order to maximise the throughput of urgent data, a constant amount of such data is transmitted in each symbol, and only the amount non-urgent data is varied.
