PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently purify toxic exhaust gas in a cold starting time by feeding air which cooled a microwave oscillator to a hollow resonator as secondary air for controlling an excess air ratio of exhaust gas in a device activating a catalyst by using microwave energy. SOLUTION: Exhaust gas G from an engine 1 is fed to an exhaust tube 3 via an exhaust manifold 2, and on the downstream side of the exhaust tube 3, mixed with secondary air fed from an air pump 19 via an air supply tube 15 and a cooling path 16 in a microwave oscillator 11 so as to be fed into a hollow resonator 6 via a punching metal 4. On the other hand, microwaves generated in the microwave oscillator 11 are transmitted to the hollow resonator 6 via a wave guiding path 12 while impedance matching between the wave guiding path 12 and the hollow resonator 6 is accomplished. Inside the hollow resonator 6, the microwaves are absorbed by a microwave heating catalyst in a microwave absorbing body 20 so as to increase a temperature of the microwave heating catalyst.
