PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element having excellent responsiveness and controllability. SOLUTION: This element consists of microcapsules in which >=2 kinds of electrified particles and a dispersion medium for dispersing these electrified particles are incorporated. The display element is constituted to execute the required display operation by changing the distribution state of the electrified particles in the microcapsules under the effect of an electric field for control, thereby imparting a change in the optical reflection characteristic of the prescribed regions of the microcapsules. The two kinds among these electrified particles contain inorganic materials respectively having isoelectric points of pHa and pHb in the surface regions thereof. In addition, the hydrogen ion concentration (pHX) of the dispersion medium described above satisfies the equation pHa<pHX<pHb.
