PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the adhesion stability of a protective film and a lubricant by disposing the protective film surface-treated in an atmosphere of plasma of an inert gas on a magnetic layer formed on a nonmagnetic substrate and holding the lubricant containing an enter compound of a perfluoro-polyether having terminal hydroxyl groups and a long chain carboxylic acid and a branched carboxylic acid perfluoroalkyl monoester in the outermost layer. SOLUTION: The lubricant contains an ester compound of a perfluoro- polyether and a long chain carboxylic acid represented by the formula R1 COOCH2-Rf-CH2OCOR1 and a branched carboxylic acid perfluoroalkyl monoester represented by the formula R2CH(R3)COO(CH2)mCnH2n+1. In the formula, Rf is a perfluoro-polyether chain R1 is a hydrocarbon or a fluorinated hydrocarbon R2 and R3 are each alkyl, m>=2, n>=4 and m+n<=30. The weight ratio between the ester compound and the branched carboxylic acid perfluoroalkyl monoester is preferably 10:90 to 90:10. The objective magnetic recording medium having superior running performance and durability is obtained.
