PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having good stable film quality although it is a thin film, the medium being provided with a protective film which has excellent CSS(contact-start-stop) resistance. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording layer 3 consisting of a magnetic metal material and a protective film 4 are disposed on a substrate 1 to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium 10. The protective film 4 consists of an amorphous hydrogenated carbon film formed by plasma CVD in such a way that at least 15 GPa film hardness is attained when the carbon film is directly formed on the substrate in 50 nm thickness and the hardness is measured by a micro indentation test method.
