PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the adhesion stability of a protective film and a lubricant by disposing the protective film surface-treated in an atmosphere of plasma of an inert gas on a magnetic layer formed on a nonmagnetic substrate and holding the lubricant containing an ester compound of a perfluoro-polyether having terminal hydroxyl groups and a long chain carboxylic acid and a long chain saturated fatty acid ester in the outermost layer. SOLUTION: The lubricant contains an ester compound of a perfluoro- polyether and a long chain carboxylic acid represented by the formula R1 COOCH2-Rf-CH2OCOR1 and a long chain saturated fatty acid ester represented by the formula R2COOR3. In the formulae, Rf is a perfluoro-polyether chain, R1 is a hydrocarbon or a fluorinated hydrocarbon and R2 and R3 are each alkyl. The weight ratio between the ester compound and the long chain saturated fatty acid ester is preferably 10:90 to 90:10. The protective film is preferably a carbon film formed by a chemical vapor growth method. The objective magnetic recording medium having superior running performance and durability is obtained.
