PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance brightness, without applying load to a tube. SOLUTION: An arc lamp 1, which emits light by causing an arc discharge between a pair of electrode members 2, 2 placed inside a tube 8, has a plurality of gas ejection means 3 for blowing a gas G towards the space between the electrode members 2, 2 and for forming a stagnant area 4, in which pressure is increased by collision of the blown gas G between the electrode members 2, 2, and evacuation means, such as a flow passage 14 and an exhaust port 15, for exhausting the collided gas from the stagnant area 4 out of the tube 8 by causing the gas to diffuse outward. The pressure of the atmosphere in the part of the area 4, where the stagnant area 4 is formed, is increased locally to generate a plasma.
