PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a high-quality display picture by setting the inclination of a wavelength separation mirror so that an angle formed by the optical axis of incident light with that of video light may be a specified angle. SOLUTION: Illuminating light emitted from a light source 31 is made incident on a polarizing beam splitter 41 through a mirror 38, and an S polarized light component submitted for the formation of the video light is reflected by reflection type liquid crystal panels 36B, 36R and 36G and separated to blue, red and green illuminating light by succeeding dichroic mirrors 42B and 42R. In such a case, the mirrors 42B and 42R are arranged to be inclined so that the angle formed by the optical axis of the illuminating light to the mirrors 42B and 42R with the optical axis of modulated light made incident on the mirrors 42B and 42R may be smaller than 90 deg.. Thus, the difference of cut-off wavelength between the reflected light of P polarized light and the reflected light of S polarized light is reduced.
