PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To spread an installation space for a drive device or the like by arranging the drive device and a drive sheave so that the whole or one part is superposed on a trunk on the upper part of an elevator shaft of an elevator and on the horizontal plane of projection. SOLUTION: The major parts of a machine beam 30, a drive device 31, and a drive sheave 7 are arranged so as to superpose on a trunk 21 on the horizontal plane of projection, and one part is superposed on a car 20 at being on the uppermost position of an elevator shaft in the vertical direction. One end of a main rope 3 is fixed to the fixed member 13 on the upper part of the elevator shaft, the other end is fixed to the fixed member 14 on the upper part of the elevator shaft through a hanging sheave 9, a changeover sheave on the upper part of the elevator shaft, a drive sheave 7, a changeover sheave 41 on the lower part of the elevator shaft, a changeover sheave 40 on the upper part of the elevator shaft, and deflecting sheaves 5, 4 of a car 20. Because the drive device 31 and the drive sheave 7 can be installed in a wide space such as the upper space of the trunk 21, the constraint condition of the drive device or a motor can be mitigated.
