PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To excellently observe both pictures of external information and picture information by selecting the external information and one part or all of the display picture in terms of area within the same field by a spatial modulation element and observing the selected external information and the picture information through an ocular. SOLUTION: Image light L1 from the external is formed as an erect image on the liquid crystal element surface 8a of a liquid crystal shutter 8 by an image-forming optical system 12 after it is transmitted through a half mirror 7. Meanwhile, picture light L2 displayed on a display 1 is formed into the picture on the surface 8a of the shutter 8 by an image-forming optical system 6 after it is reflected by the half mirror 7. The picture light L2 is the light having a polarized light component in a vertical direction to a paper surface by a polarizing plate 5 having the axis of polarization in the vertical direction V to the paper surface. Therefore, the pixel of the shutter 8 is intercepted by the plate 9 in an on-operation state, and the pixel of the shutter 8 is transmitted through the plate 9 in an off-state and reflected on an observer's eye 11 by an ocular optical system 10.
