PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safely perform work by measuring the value of the degree of whiteness for each grain of sample rice by more accurately measuring the degree of whiteness of the sample rice, by determining ranking according to the number of grains for each range of the degree of whiteness and/or the rate of the number of grains and the average value of the degree of whiteness of the entire sample rice, by performing efficient grain polishing work, and by verifying measurement work. SOLUTION: A device is provided with a detection means 4 that detects the quantity of light with an arbitrary wavelength in diffusion reflection light for each grain of sample rice, an operation means 6 that uses the quantity of light being detected by the detection means 4 and calculates the value of the degree of whiteness for each grain of the sample rice, a sorting means 8 that allows the value of the degree of whiteness for each grain being calculated by the operation means 6 correspond to the range of the degree of whiteness being divided in steps for sorting into each division, and a processing means 10 that judges and processes the rank of the degree of whiteness of the entire sample rice according to the number of grains for each range of the degree of whiteness being sorted by the sorting means 8 and/or the rate of the number of grains and the average value of the degree of whiteness of the entire sample rice.
