PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a load of an initial test force highly accurate at a Rockwell hardness test. SOLUTION: A sample stage 22 is raised by rotating a sample stage motor 26 forward until a load slightly smaller than a predetermined initial test force is applied by an indenter 15 to a sample T. After the motor 26 is stopped, a motor 30 is driven to press the indenter 15 to the sample T via a load lever 11. The initial test force is set accordingly. At this time, a press force of the indenter 15 detected by a load sensor 50 is fed back to a control part 60 for the motor 30, so that the initial test force can be set highly accurately.
