PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a rhodamine derivative having a specific chemical structure, capable of exhibiting performances attaining conversion from blue to red in a sufficiently high conversion efficiency. SOLUTION: This rhodamine derivative is represented by formula I (R1 to R8 and Y are each H, a 1-30C alkyl or a 3-30C cycloalkyl, a 2-30C alkenyl, a 2-30C alkenyl or the like; X is O or S; (p) is 1 or 2; (q) is 1 or O; Ar1 is a 6-30C aryl containing 6-30C nucleus carbon atoms; A is F-, Cl-, Br- or the like) such as a rhodamine derivative of formula II. The derivative of formula I is obtained by reacting a substituted phthalic acid of formula III or its anhydride with an aminophenol derivative or aminothiophenol derivative of formula IV in a solventless state or in an inert solvent such as 1,2dichlorobenzene, at 160 deg.C to the boiling point of the solvent. A coloring matter, a color conversion film and an organic electroluminescent element can be provided by using the rhodamine derivative of formula I.
