PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition which is excellent in film formability and drying characteristics and, in addition, and can form coating films which have no tackiness and satisfactory hardness. SOLUTION: A water-based coating composition comprises (A) a core/shell type emulsion and (B) a film-forming auxiliary, and the glass transition temperature of the core part of component (A) is -20-50 deg.C; that of the shell part is higher 50 deg.C; and the total glass transition temperature of both these parts is not higher than 30 deg.C, and component (B) is an alcoholic component having a boiling point of 100-270 deg.C.
