PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrodepositable polyimide excellent in heat resistance and electric insulating properties and dispersible in water by reacting a tetracarboxylic dianhydride with a diamine component contg. 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid. SOLUTION: This polyimide has an acid value of 10-20 mmolKOH/100 g resin and pref, has a 10% thermal decomposition temp. of 250 deg.C or higher, an imidization degree of 85% or higher, and a wt. average mol.wt. of 10,000-100,000. The diamine component pref. contains 10-50 mol% diaminobenzoic acid. The tetracarboxylic dianhydride may be arom. or aliph. When a polyimide is formed from a tetracarboxylic dianhydride and an arom. diamine, it is necessary to select such a combination as to give a solvent-soluble polyimide.
