A brake comprises a rotatable brake drum 10 having a resilient rim 40, a brake shoe 26 pivoted at 32 outwardly of the drum and engageable with the drum between the points A and B thereon, a power element 44 connected to the brake shoe to move it into engagement with the drum periphery, a restraining member 42 being provided to limit pivotal movement of the shoe by the drum. Two shoes 26, 28 may be provided a respective one of which, according to the direction of motion of the drum 10, will engage and dig into the rim 40 when the solenoid 44 is energized to actuate the arms 48, 50 engaging the parts 58. Springs 60 withdraw the shoes from the rim when the solenoid is de-energized. The shoes and the rim are of resilient plastics material, that of the shoes being harder than that of the rim. |
