PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect and judge presence/absense of approaching vehicles with high accuracy by simple analysis of surrounding sounds obtained by sound collecting parts. SOLUTION: An approaching vehicle detector 1 to detect presence/absense of vehicles existing around the present vehicle by the analysis of the surrounding sounds is characterized by providing the sound collecting parts 2, 3 to collect the surrounding sounds, a signal processing part 8 to convert the collected surrounding sounds to a sound pressure level signal, a vehicle existence judging part 11 to compare absolute quantity of the sound pressure level signal in a specified frequency band with a judging level and to judge the presence/absense of the vehicles existing around the present vehicle, a vehicle approach judging part 12 to judge whether the vehicles existing around the present vehicle approach or not from timewise change of the sound pressure level signal in the specified frequency band and an output part 5 to output information about the vehicles existing around the present vehicle.
