PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a peripheral device against damage due to a shock, vibration, a fall, etc., by providing a notebook type personal computer with means for avoiding the damage by outputting an alarm signal when the extent of a sensed shock exceeds a specific value. SOLUTION: A shock detector 21 senses the extent of a shock applied to the notebook type personal computer and coverts the extent into a 1st signal S1 and an amplifying circuit 22 amplifies the 1st signal S1 and outputs a 2nd signal S2. A shock monitor unit 23 converts the 2nd signal S2 into a digital signal by an analog-to-digital converter 23a and a microprocessor 23b receives and processes the digital signal. Once the 2nd signal S2 exceeds a decision value, the digital signal also exceeds the specific value as well. The shock monitor unit 23 outputs an alarm signal AL to inform peripheral devices such as a hard disk HDD, a D-ROM device, and a floppy disk FDD that they should follow the procedure for avoiding damage due to the shock.
