PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispense with a rubbing treatment having problems such as generation of dust and electrostatic charge by irradiating a photosensitive polymer compound comprising a specified structural unit, having a specified logarithmic viscosity number in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, with a polarized ultraviolet ray and subjecting a part of its side chain to a photochemical reaction. SOLUTION: The alignment layer for a liquid crystal display element is obtained by irradiating a photosensitive polymer compound, comprising a structural unit expressed by the formula and having 0.1-5.0 dl/g logarithmic viscosity number in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone with 0.5 g/dl of concentration at a temp. of 30±0.01 deg.C, with a polarized ultraviolet ray to subject a part of its side chains to a photochemical reaction. In the formula, G1 stands for hydrogen, fluorine, a chlorine atom or a monovalent 1-12C organic group. G2 stands for a single bond, -COO-, -OCO- or the like independently and G3 stands for a single bond or 1-20C alkylene group. X and Y stand each hydrogen atom, fluorine atom, chlorine atom or the like independent of one another and m stands for 0-3 integer.
