PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate influence on the use of a magnetic tape drive by the present host even when installation is performed by another host for the magnetic tape unit being assigned to the prevent host. SOLUTION: At an installation request, a device installing means 2 records medium control information on a magnetic tape loaded in the magnetic tape drive 6 in a global device management table by a medium recognizing means 3 when the host is installed for the 1st time, or obtain medium control information from the table when not. At an allocation request for the magnetic tape, a device allocating means 4 places the magnetic tape drive 6 in standby mode according to the host device allocation information in the global device management table when the device is allocated to the other host or records information showing that the device is being allocated to this host in the host device allocation information in the global device management table when not. At a release request for the magnetic tape, a device releasing means 5 deletes the information showing that the device is allocated to this host from the host device allocation information in the global device management table.
