The invention concerns a device for characterising the resistance to damage of a protective coating of all or part of a packaging (31), comprising means for causing damage (2, 20), characterised in that: a) said damaging means (2, 20) is subjected to a vibrating movement ensuring a series of impacts, in the vertical direction, against a strip on said coating; b) at each impact, said means is applied simultaneously on only one fraction of said package circular strip; said means is randomly applied on all or part of the strip, by freely rotating said means relatively to said strip; d) the action of said damaging means is characteristically adjustable in intensity such that the device can be calibrated relative to an industrial process.
