A mixer for dental amalgam has a cylindrical mixing chamber 14 with a rotatable agitator comprising a helical spring 19 extending the full length of the chamber and closely adjacent its wall. In operation the spring is axially compressed and its lower end rests on a bearing surface 20c of a pivoted valve plate 20 (see also Figs. 1A and 2, not shown). The spring is rotated in a direction to urge the materials downwards and they circulate upwards through its open core. When the valve plate is moved to register an aperture (20b) therein with the mixing chamber the rotating spring assists discharge and if the edge of the aperture is brought into contact with the coils the spring will back up with the chamber to permit the valve to be closed. |
