PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical system with an enlarged depth of field which is easily changeable over to an ordinary optical system. SOLUTION: A video microscope to which this optical system is applied has an image pickup optical system which consists of lenses 1, 2, and 3, phase modulating masks 4 and 5 and a CCD camera 6, an illumination optical system which consists of a light source device 18, a light guide 7 and an illumination head 8, a CCD controller 9 which controls the CCD camera 6, an image processor 10 which processes the image data from this CCD controller 9 and a monitor 11 which displays the processing result by this image processor 10. Both of the phase modulating masks 4 and 5 have curved surface shapes, the one surface of which is a plane and the other surface of which is expressed by z=kx3 (where k is a constant). While the one phase modulating mask 5 is fixed to a barrel 15, another phase modulating mask 4 is supported rotatably relative to this barrel 15.
