PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize visibility of an image depending on the image. SOLUTION: A beam current detection section 5 of the display device 101 detects the luminance of an image displayed on a screen 10 through a beam current J flowing through the inside of a CRT 1. A drive control section 40 switches selectively switches 42, 43 based on the detected luminance. Changing stepwise a limit characteristic of a current I flowing through a secondary coil 32 of an inductor 3 controls induction of a primary coil 31. As a result, a frequency characteristic of a gain of an amplifier section 2 that amplifies an image signal Pin is controlled. For example, the frequency characteristic is controlled so that the gain for a high frequency component is increased for a binary image of normal display so that the gain for the high frequency component is decreased on the contrary for a binary image of reverse display.
