PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographic image reader which confines the size of an aperture of a negative mask to one kind in spite of reading of the images of films of plural different sized, eliminates the need for plural mask parts and their storage places, eliminates the need for laborious work of mask part exchange, etc., and eliminates the need for executing laborious setting, such as alignment before a scanning start state after holding of the film. SOLUTION: The photographic image reader having a light source section, an image detecting means and the negative mask disposed between the light source section and the image detecting section is so constituted as to confine the aperture 24a of the negative mask to one kind in spite of reading of the images of the films of different sizes, to determine a reference position by executing the alignment of the one side 24c of the aperture 24a of the negative mask and the one side of the film and to start the reading of the image of the film from the reference position.
