A seal (1) for an electrochemical cell has outer edge walls (3) and a base (5), with a centrally located cylindrical hub (7), which base includes a recessed ventable area (20) of weakness at its intersection with the hub. The area of weakness spans the circumference of the hub to form an arc between about 135 DEG and about 250 DEG and the recess is so configured as to conentrate the effects of pressure build up within the cell at the area of weakness.
