PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and high-definition optical modulator capable of preventing color mixture, improving the color purity and improving the light availability. SOLUTION: The optical modulator is provided with a liquid crystal display element 20 having a pixel set consisting of plural pixel parts 22R, 22G, and 22B respectively transmitting through or reflecting the luminous flux spectrally separated into primary color beams and optically modulating them and microlenses 32 corresponding to the pixel set. The optical modulator is provided with a microlens array 30 converging the luminous flux of respective primary color beams to respective pixel parts 22R, 22G, and 22B and light shield parts 41 preventing the luminous flux of respective primary color beams from being made incident on a non-corresponding pixel part 22B-2 excepting the corresponding pixel parts. |
